For many years, DSV breeders have not only selected for yield, disease resistance and other traditional criteria, they have also analysed important forage quality parameters. DSV has taken a new step forward in forage grass breeding, with all varieties being tested for digestibility of organic matter, crude protein, water soluble carbohydrates (mainly sugar), cell wall fraction, digestibility of cell wall and ash content. Milk Index varieties are not only tested by DSV: They offer outstanding forage quality based on results of independent European institutes (like the Chamber of Agriculture in Germany) or recommended lists (e.g. NIAB list for recommended grass and clover varieties).
