MADALINA is a dark blue flowering variety, which was bred by the Nardi institute in Romania. Our close cooperation and frequent exchange of material has led to the exclusive representation of this variety by DSV. The genetic background of MADALINA exists completely from Romanian ancestors. This fact leads to an excellent winter hardiness and persistence, which is complemented by a good drought tolerance. Additionally, MADALINA is a so-called “continental type”, which fits to the Eastern European climate very well. MADALINA is in dormancy group 4*. Next to the climatic suitability, the yield potential of this variety is a remarkable improvement compared to the common used varieties.
MADALINA had a dry matter yield of 17.1 Mt/ha in our trials at the Nardi breeding station. That means a relative yield of 111 compared to the standard variety Magnat (100), while Selana, another commonly used variety, reached just a score of 97.

* Most alfalfa plants go dormant in the fall in preparation for winter. Early fall dormant types show very little growth after the September clipping, later fall dormant types demonstrate substantial growth. Fall dormancy is measured on a (1-9) scale, where 1=very early fall dormant and 9=non-dormant. The fall dormancy classes (2-4) are winterhardy types.
